Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; Louis G. Hurd house. Hurd was a prominent lawyer (1845-1927) and practiced law for over 50 years. Original Owner/Builder: Louis G. Hurd lived at 37 Arlington as of 1888. He was here as of 1890, and was a partner with Henderson, Hurd, Daniels and Kiesel. Building History: Land transactions: Enoch Brown to Burton Carpenter, 1841; Alfred McDaniels acquires and he was largely responsible for platting the larger area. The Grove and High Street lots were laid out in 1853, and this lot was split into three parcels and sold off. Louis G. Hurd purchased the property August 27, 1886 for $500 and he built a three-story frame house in 1890 at a cost of $9,000 (Herald, January 18, 1891). He paid off a $5,000 mortgage in 1894-95. A third floor ball room was still not finished when Hurd died January 25, 1929. The family retained the house until 1938 when Hurd’s son-in-law sold it to John Walbrun, a local contractor. Walbrun built the terrace garage, stairs and removed the second floor, rebuilding the roof. The house was duplexed and sold in 1929 to Harry and Lauretta VanNest. Arnold and Elizabeth Henry acquired the house in 1971 at which time it was a duplex with a separate living unit on the second floor. David and Jean Fyten bought it in 1973. Joan and Jed Noon acquired the house in 1985 and restored it as a single-family residence. The wraparound porch and its gazebo extension were restored in 1995 (commun-ication from Jed Noon, August 2003; 1996 Old House Enthusiasts Tour). The sewer tap dates to August 9, 1904.
