7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1872/1886
(Assessor), two-story brick gable front Italianate side hall plan.
Physical Description: elongated rectangular plan (78x25 in front, by 19 in back, south wing 17’6”x14,
recessed south side porch, 5’6”x42) broad stone basement wall fully exposed with door and three
windows (stone voussoir arches), no brackets although it is likely that these were removed when frieze,
soffits were covered with aluminum siding, left side front entry, broader window openings with soldier
brick voussoir arches, wrap-around porch on front and east side up to centered south gable roof wing,
second south side porch behind the wing. Two-story verandah to southwest.
Alterations: attic window enlarged, cornice resided and brackets likely removed, windows replaced,
porch metal grille supports replaced original supports although porch likely is c.1910 replacement of
shorter original porch. Permits note re-roofings in 1951 (half), 1969, 1983, rear side stairway rebuilt
1959.
Landscaping/Setting: corner location on high terrace, angled concrete stair approach from corner, stone
retaining wall in front, basement walkout to north. Parking area to west off alley. Ground rises to west,
stone retaining wall on rear alleyway.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; attributed to Eugene and Anna Adams and dated to c.1900?
Original Owner/Builder: Cyrus Morrill lived on the northwest corner of High and Chestnut in 1873,
apparently not this house. He lived at 127 Highland Place 1884-90 and was deputy inspector of oils.
Richard Morrill owned the parcel when it was sewered c.1890. He built a two-story brick residence for
$8,000 in 1869 (Herald, December 16, 1879). Directories place him on the corner of Walnut and
th
Highland in 1873, at 127 High in 1874 and 1886, on 11 between Olive and Spruce as of 1868-69. He
was a partner in Morrll Brothers (Cyrus and Richard) grocers.
Building History: Triplex as of 1971, Jim Shade owned as of 1974 buying it from Bert and Hilda Shade,
the family had converted it into apartments. The house retains Adams Company fireplaces. The
Dubuque County Historical Society gave it a preservation award (Telegraph-Herald, January 9, 1995).
