7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1895 (Julien’s
Journal), 1901-2, Neo-Classical style (massing, Palladian façade and gable front window set, massive
rounded porch, pedimented front, row of dormers).
Designer/Builder: Fridolin Heer Sr., architect, (Telegraph-Herald, April 23, 1933).
Physical Description: two-story frame rectangular plan (60x31’5”) with south centered gable roof wing
(15’6”x7) and indented back of plan (from the east, 21’6”x4). High pitched hip roof, combination
pavilion and pedimented gable roof dormer centered on front, evokes a Palladian sense of raised
central element with matching flanking wings, three narrow pedimented dormers run along the core
east wall plan and flank a tall square corbelled chimney, a fourth dormer is on the back of the same
side of the roof. A single story ell runs from the north end of the wrap-around porch (42’ frontage, 33’
depth) and infills the northeast corner of the plan. A rectangular entry porch (12x11) with broad
pediment infills the southwest corner in front of the side wing, three triple sets of columns support its
outer corners. Raised stone foundation and presumably wooden water table. Battered stone sidewalls
on steps. There are six bedrooms upstairs, two other bedrooms and an attic billiard room.
Alterations: very well preserved. No permit data. Records for 567 note 1952 re-siding.

Special Significance; Anthony F. Heeb
Building History: Directories confirm Heeb as here 1918-21. The Fitzgeralds purchased it in April 2002
from Hillcrest Family Services, the property was being used as a girls’ home and was called Riverview.
They began its restoration as a single-family residence (2003 Old House Enthusiasts House Tour).
L. A. Rhomberg owned the parcel when it was sewered c.1894.
Directories first list 1902, with Anthony Heeb, secretary treasurer Dubuque Brewing & Malting Co., here
through 1915.
Julilen’s Journal (6:3:6-17) dates building to 1895, credits to A. H. Heeb, terms it Queen Anne style,
places Hillcrest youth shelter here.
