Narrative Description: This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1895/1896 (Assessor), Neo Classical style (arcaded jerkinhead dormer, upper level twin orioles, lower level window sets, Classical style pedimented porch). Physical Description: square plan with hip roof, jerkinhead side dormers, rear centered chimney, twin second floor three-sided orioles on each end, straight stone lintels and sills, the latter are part of stone belt courses on each sill level, two first floor four-light sets (transom, sidelights and large main light) are set beneath long solid stone lintels, the sets have cast iron frames, centered and paired entrances with transoms, pedimented gable roof entry porch with tapered Ionic columns and elaborate classical style frieze, light veneer brick on front, raised stone foundation, narrower centered rear two-story brick wing with hip roof, broad eaves with modillions. The front dormer has a shingled front, twin rounded arches and recessed windows, the dormer base is bracketed with a cornice. Front rectangular plan measures 30x40, broad centered rear wing measures 27x32, rear porch 5’6” x 32, front porch 6x12. Alterations: the orioles were likely open at the top, they have been boxed in and covered with faux asphalt brick siding. Permits note re-roofings in 1936 (428), 1977 (art gallery, 422), 1984 (422), 1996 (434), 2000 (422), roof repair 1970 and 1987 (422), handrails and stairs 1976 (422), basement alterations 1976 (1976). Vertical siding above bays and on dormers post-dates 1986. Landscaping/Setting: parcel rises slightly to the southwest, fronts north. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; Rocco Buda Arts Resource Center, Original Owner/Builder: Julien’s Journal (6:3:8 credits to McKenzie in 1897, who doesn’t appear in 1896-99 directories (Edward and James McKenzie lived at 859 Seminary). Says Queen Anne style with yellow brick. Building History: this building and another to the east replaced a duplex that occupied the whole parcel. Assessor splits property as of 1971. Ruth and Russ Nash owned this property by 1976 and founded the art resource center (1999 Old House Enthusiasts House Tour). Fred Weigel owned the parcel when it was sewered c.1889. First directory listing 1899 places Isaac C. Diefenderfer in 422/18, and R. P. Eubanks, 1902, 434/24-28. 9.
