Frederick A. Gniffke House Dubuque

7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1847 (west part), 1870
(east part), two-story brick gable front side hall Italianate style design (oculus attic window, narrow
windows).
Physical Description: raised stone foundation, basement windows have double rowlock brick arches set
above stone cap, windows are vertically aligned, left side entry, straight stone lintels and sills, broad
gables, east side first story three-sided bay (3x8), east side chimneys, gable roof entry porch with
square pillars. Plan is rectangle (28’6”x37’6”) with right-hand front wing (6’6x23’6”). Removed sheds
(1976) were attached at rear of plan.
Alterations: Modified by addition of a two-story brick side gable wing, setback from the core house
(present by 1891), bay present by 1909, at that time a porch covered the sidewing and the entryway,
this was still present as of 1950. Permits note re-roofings in 1973, 1992 (east dormer and front porch),
1995, attached rear garage built 1961, two-story brick garage demolished 1976, 45x22 carport 1982.
Landscaping/Setting: ground rises to the north slightly, driveway behind the house from the east, fronts
south, public walkway to west of the house.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; Frederick A. Gniffke (1833-1915), founder and editor of the National Demokrat as
of 1874 (published until 1933). Gniffke was born in western Prussia, came to the U.S. by 1850, learned
the printers’ trade in Newburyport, Massachusetts, worked in Boston and Cambridge and came to
Dubuque in 1856. He founded the National Democrat, a daily German Democratic newspaper, that
same year. Gniffke served in the state legislature, and served on the board of education. His son
Henry B. Gniffke continued to live at this address, managed his fathers newspaper from 1915 until it
suspended publication in 1933, served as city treasurer and served on the library board (Telegraph-
Herald, Times-Journal, February 11, 1934).
Original Owner/Builder: Alexander D. Anderson (original portion). Gniffke built the east half of this

house, a large two-story brick residence on 14 west of Bluff in 1870 (directories then place him on the

north side of 14) (Herald, December 18, 1870). He previously lived on the north side of Julien
between Walnut and Spruce (1868Gniffke built the east wing in 1870 when he acquired the property.
Anderson bough the land from Rufus Rittenhouse in 1846. Anderson sold the house to William J.
Neely in 1854. Capitalist J. K. Graves bought it in 1861 selling it immediately to H. P. Ward. George L.
Brown bought it in 1862 and held it until 1870 when he sold it to Gniffke.
Building History: F. A. Griffke/Gniffkee owned the parcel when it was sewered c.1889and in 1873 when
it was re-platted.
First directory listing is 1875 with Frederick A. Gniffke, editor of the National Demokrat who remains
