7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1884-85, Gothic
Revival (rosette quatrefoil attic light, elongated first floor windows, round topped upper level windows,
through cornice gable roof dormer with Gothic bargeboard, vertical exposed timber cladding), Neo
Classical tower addition in northeast corner.
Physical Description: high raised stone foundation with quoin treatments, gable roof and gable roof
wing. Southeast corner porch. Rectangular plan (30’6”x35) has recessed corner front porch, rear
porch 5’6x20.
Alterations: stair tower, painted brick, window reduction on upper level, concrete stoop with metal
railing. Permits note re-roofings in 1966, 1995. Assessor notes indoor pool (1974). 10x18 frame
garage on 1971 card, gone?
Landscaping/Setting: ground rises to the west and south. Fronts north.

Special Significance; Moses H. Martin, president of the Martin-Strelau Co.
Building History: M. H. Martin owned the parcel when it was sewered c.1889.
The earliest directory listing found places Moses H. Martin, Martin Bros. (J. S. and M. H.) transfer
th
service, here as of 1886. He is at 40 Burch as of 1883 and Bluff and 5 1884. He last appears here in
1896 when he was president of the Martin-Strelau Co.
