Crawford House Dubuque Name of Property County 1209 Prairie Dubuque Address City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1872, Italianate style (belvedere, massing), modified c.1910 to Neo Classical style (side wing, entry porches, faux window lintels and sills, modillions). Physical Description: two-story brick near square plan (31’6”x35 core, centered right hand side wing, 20x37) with hip roof, centered belvedere, and twin “fronts.” Symmetrical fenestration on the core house with a Neo Classical style west side entry porch, flat topped with paired Tuscan style columns and entablature, and a broader matching east porch with deck and upper level balustrade (8x25). Centered entrances with transoms. A south end two-story side wing (28x16) has window bands on both levels, and corner pilasters with stone capital insets at each spring stone level. The eaves project broadly and are supported on all sides with modillions. Faux Classical style lintels and sills have been attached on the main façade fronts. The original north end two-story wing has a single-story wrap around porch along its east and north sides (apparently a recent connection of a 12x29 northeast corner porch and a 10x7 north end porch). There is a three-sided bay on the northwest ground floor corner. Concrete foundation. Alterations: the 1950 Sanborn shows an L-plan with small east porch and a full-length west porch, in addition to a straight side porch along the east side of the north wing. It would appear that the present porch system post-dates 1950 and that the house was re-fronted eastward since that time. The south wing is not indicated on the map either. The belvedere might be a replacement given its window replacements but this is not known to be the case. The exterior was transformed into the Neo Classical style, the eaves were rebuilt, faux lintels and sills added along with the porches. Permits note above ground pool 1992, pool decking 1993. Assessors card, 1971, shows erased west side entry porch. Brick garage converted to an apartment in 1974. Landscaping/Setting: very large lot (the house pre-dated the present street system, Walnut did not exist when built), a substantial stone wall runs along the east and north property lines with cuts for steps in both those directions. A cast iron fence caps the wall and there are gates. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; pictured as P. W. Crawford house in Souvenir Gems, 1897, Andrew Y. McDonald, here 1918-21+. Building History: depicted on 1872 birds eye with belvedere, brick carriage house also present, and arbor to the east. The 1889 map shows it as perhaps three-stories high with a Mansard roof on the core structure, and a gabled north wing roof. Daniel Reardon built a 2.5-story brick residence on Prairie for $3,000 in 1870 (Herald, December 18, 1870). 1209 and 1295 Prairie are the only candidates. John Bell owned the parcel when it was sewered c.1889. The tap dates to October 5, 1956.
