Nicholaus and Margaret Kaufman House Dubuque

7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. Style/Year: 1884-85, pre-1889,
two-story brick side gable vernacular residence plan with unusual centered two-story porch/dormer unit.
Physical Description: rectangular plan (60x32) with equal width rear gable roof wing, near full-width hip
roof front porch (5x22) with a cantilevered two-story frame porch. The latter is certainly a later addition
and is unmatched in the city. Classical columns on the second story window and an attic level frieze
hint at a Neo Classical influence, c.1900, twin rowlock brick window arches and stone sills, symmetrical
fenestration with centered entry with five-pane sidelights and a rounded transom. The porch has
brackets and hint that the porch and upper porch were built at the same time. There is a single-story
three-sided bay (an addition, faux brick, 3’6”x8) on the north side wall and a chimney at the south end
of the roof ridge. Rear porch measures 8x32.
Alterations: porch as noted, entry likely reduced from double entry. The rear wing indicates
considerable enlargement. Two rounded Italianate style windows have been reused in a wood shingle
rear dormer. Windows on the side walls have jack arches and the bay is an addition. Permits note a
re-roofing in 1994, alterations from five to six living units 1948 ($900), constructing two dormers 1950,
repairing fire damage 1968 ($950).
Landscaping/Setting: terrace setting on large corner lot, the house being on the extreme south property
line of the parcel, fronts east, drive to north.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; Kaufman was a carpenter-contractor.
Original Owner/Builder: Nicholaus and Margaret Kaufman.
Building History: permit for alteration to brick dwelling, $900, 1948.
Nick Kauffman owned the parcel when it was sewered (no date). The sewer tap dates toJuly 10, 1925.
First directory listing places Gerhard, Nicholaus and John Kaufmann here in 1886 (at 1305 Elm
previously), Nicholaus Kaufman here in 1890, a carpenter, with John, a carpenter who was a boarder.
By 1896 Nicholaus is listed as a contractor along with G. F. and Frank Kaufman. Still here 1899, G. F.
Kaufman operated a millinery at 976 Main, Nicholas and Margaret remained and he was still a
contractor, also Frank A. Kaufman.
