7. Narrative Description:
StyleNear: pre-1892, Assessor estimates 1895, Queen Anne style (turret and tower, high pitched hip
roof, rounded porch, irregular massing, gable fronts, bays and dormers). This was a very excellent
example of the style given the asymmetry of plan and particularly the northwest portion that reads
almost as an attached distinct house front.
Designer/Builder: Ferd Heer, Sr. (Telegraph-Herald, April 23, 1933). Builders G. Weaver and S.
Alexander (marks on trimwork).
Physical Description: the two-story core is basically an L-plan (very irregular, overall length 51, depth
47, core rectangle is 30x37) with a broad three-sided east bay (7'6"x19), corner full height-plus round
tower with turret in the northeast front corner (11x11), and a fairly massive north-fronting square cut
pavilion with three-sided corner bay and gable roof dormer cap (5'6"x28 to north, 5'6"x27 to west). The
east bay has a turret top with finial and a gable roof dormer and chimney set above it. The tower is
centered on a broad wrap-around porch with rounded corner to the northeast. The north wing has its
own high-pitched hip roof and a corbelled chimney. There is a raised stone foundation, wooden water
table, original porch with round column and its original siding. A rear wing measures 4x23'6", a rear
porch on the west rear measures 6'6"x29'6" and two enclosed porches across the east half of the rear,
measure 28x6 collectively. Light fixtures came from Marshall Fields in Chicago (packing crates still in
house as of 2002, fixtures gone).
Alterations: flat storm windows were added to the tower and required squared off box casings-this is a
reversible alteration and the original curved glass remains behind them. Permits note a re-roofing in
1991, house repair 1931, replacement of 12x14 section of porch flooring 1994, rubber roof on front
porch 1996.
Landscaping/Setting: prominent corner lot with an excavated terrace setting, ground level rises to the
west and drops to the south, house fronts east and north.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; Frederick A. Rumpf House.
Original Owner/Builder: Edwin W. and Mary Albee.
Building History: Pictured in Souvenir Gems, 1897. In 1902 Rumpf built a new house at 1083 (address
assumed) Grove Terrace using architect Thomas Carkeek (Telegraph-Herald, April 6, 1902) and
moved to that new house. Directory confirms Rumpf as living here in 1899, followed by James Ryan in
1918 and Moses Martin as of 1921.
Rumpf lived at Hill and Walnut in 1871 when he improved his residence, and directories place him at
154 Walnut (Tribune, December 21, 1871). He again made improvements ($300) in 1876 (Herald,
December 2, 1876) and was at the same address.

Directories list Edwin W. Albee here 1899-1922. He was the second owner and the family continued to
own it until the 1950s. He was manager of Albee Bakery (sold to National Biscuit Co. which is now
Nabisco), and lived at 687 Bluff as of 1896. Mrs. Mary B. Albee here 1923-27, Grace and Dr. C. S.
Searles here 1929-39, 1948-65 and the house was vacant 1941-45. Harold and Mary Meloy owned the
house 1965-2002. Current owner since then (Biays Bowerman research).
The Mary P. Albee Estate owned the property as of 1955 and the Assessor noted that they were the
original owners.
