Larqe House Name of Pro~erty 584 West 11 h Street Address Dubuque County Dubuque City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. StyleNear: c.1873-74, Second Empire style (Mansard roof, dormers). Gambrel roof dormer treatment is unsusual. Window surrounds appear to be quite distinct with decorative rosettes placed at the mid-point on the window frames. Side hall plan (left double door entry) Physical Description: this is a smaller two-story brick irregular plan with a squarish front core (24x30) and offset west rear wing (22x19 with full-height east bay, 3x9, west bay 1x9'6"), as well as a two-story rear brick wing (20'6"x20, rear enclosed porch 19'6"x7) that is also offset west (rear stair system). The mansard is a true one. There are three front dormers and two on the front side walls. Carved or cast stone lintels are very unusual because only the ornate spring stone and key stone elements project from the wall plane. The entry porch is square cut and the entrance is recessed with paneled sidewalls, there are two-light transoms. Stone foundation (stuccoed), symmetrical fenestration. There are west side basement windows and an east side cellar entry. Alterations: well preserved. First floor lintels are faux wood covers on brick arches-might indicate that a single-story plan was enlarged? Permits note a re-roofing in 1990, alterations 1945, erect cement block garage 1945, repair stairs 1982, repair rear porch and enlarge 1991. Landscaping/Setting: terrace setting, ground drops to the east and south. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Original Owner/Builder: Walter P. Large. Building History: This building and 596 to the west both have plain rowlock brick window arches on the ground floor and stone ones above, in this case the lower windows are single rowlocks which is very unusual. This implies the same builder/designer. W. P. Large owned this parcel when it was sewered. The sewer tap dates to c.1914. As of 1955 owner lived downstairs with one apartment on each of the upper two levels. Jacob and Siena Liepe own 1946-70. Walter P. Large, bookkeeper, here 1874-81, Mrs. Rowena G. Large here 1899-1905, not listed 1882- 98, J. L. Mullany here 1906, no listing 1908-11, Jost Horr here 1913-34 as 580 (Biays Bowerman research). 9.
