Narrative Description: This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. StyleNear: 1851, Assessor says 1850, 1860 (Julien's Journal), Italianate Style (brackets, rounded front 2/2 windows, side hall plan). Most unusual feature is the enlarged central upper front window, set between flanking lesser rounded ones. Physical Description: two-story brick T-plan (rectangular east portion measures 24x43'6", west wing 15'6x18'6", rear wing 3x16) with gable front roof, left rear wing of later date, raised stone foundation, four tier brick water table, left side entry on side hall plan, single rowlock lower window arches, double ones on second floor, corner hip roof porch set in front of west wing (post-1950), Neo Classical window treatments on end wall of wing hint at later date for wing (pre-1950). Two west side chimneys on core house. Alterations: the classical broken pediment frame entryway is of later date and surely came with the added wing. Permits note re-roofings in 1942, 1974, 1996. Kitchen wing dates to 1870-80, replaces summer kitchen. Landscaping/Setting: front stone wall, with steps and gate, terrace setting, large open yard to west with gazebo, high terrace at alley in back, rear garage, fronts north. Yard doubled with demolition of adjacent house. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Building History: the house has had 17 owners, most notably William B. Poinsett III, owner for 20 years, whose friends ranged from Emelia Earhart to Walter Mondale. John and Joan Efkon purchased it in 1984 and began restoration. They added a gazebo in 1994. The house received a county historical society in 1995-96 (Telegraph-Herald, March 5, 1967; 1996 Old House Enthusiasts House Tour). Likely visible on 1872 birds eye, certainly present in 1889 view. This building and 584 both have plain rowlock brick window arches on the ground floor and stone ones above, in this case the lower windows are single rowlock arches which is very unusual. This implies the same builder/designer. The 1950 Sanborn Map shows no houses west of this one as far as Spruce Street, south side of 11th. Ruth and Russ Nash restored the house and this yard was the launching point for the first historic house tour by the Dubuque Symphony Auxiliary in 1981 (Julien's Journal, 6:3: April 1981). George W. Kezsel owned this parcel when it was sewered. 9.
