Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; Jesse P. and Mary P. [Johnson] Farley Cottage Original Owner/Builder: Hiram Jackson built the front part of the house c.1865, his widow lived here until 1903. Building History: Jessee Preston Farley brought his family to Dubuque from Galena in 1837 although he played a local role from 1833 onwards. Legend places them in this area (Farley was first a lead miner) and this house could be the first house or a second one. Farley first served as a town trustee (1840), councilman (1841-42, 1851) and mayor (1852-54). He was a leading early advocate of railroads and was largely responsible for the organization of the Dubuque and Sioux City Railroad. He married a second time, in 1844, to Mary L. Johnson. He fathered 17 children, two of whom still lived as of 1934 (Telegraph-Herald and Times-Journal, April 15, 1934, also house photo). Ed and Jan Zenner purchased the cottage and began restoration in 1977. The Fredericks bought it in 1994 (Telegraph-Herald, December 20, 1985; 1996 Old House Enthusiasts House Tour). Not visible on the 1872 birds eye view but possibly obstructed by another building in the foreground. The Farley family owned the house and all of the land around it, the location of many lead mines, until 1853. Edward James Jr. followed, C. C. Hewitt, 1855; Morris McCombs, 1856; A. H. Dillon, Jr. 1857; Thomas Millen, 1861; Elizabeth McCombs, 1863; Richard Waller, 1865; Mary A. Swivel, 1865; Hiram B. Jackson, 1866; Louis G. Wood, 1891; George Luke, 1895; Thodore Werner, 1896; J. J.
