Narrative Description: This property is located in the West Eleventh Street Historic District. StyleNear: 1870, 1895, 1.5-story vernacular frame gable front (west core) with Modified Gothic style east side wing c.1895. Latter evidenced by pointed end light windows and through-cornice dormer. Physical Description: L-plan (upright 18x26, wing 16x22'6"), core has side hall layout with right hand entrance with transom, stone foundation. Single story rear wing (26x12, flanking end porches 4x12), walkout basement door to south. Alterations: asbestos siding, window replacement, metal porch and metal porch supports, 1950 Sanborn shows a single story store on the front of 646 (16x12) now removed, and a small entry porch on 652, large rear garage gone. Permits note re-roofings in 1938, 1994, re-side 1972. Landscaping/Setting: leveled by raised foundation on site that drops away south, short concrete retaining wall in front of house, driveway to west of house. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Original Owner/Builder: William Hedford built a two-story frame dwelling (18x20) with a 12x14 rear wing for $1,200 in 1870 "on 11th on the bluff" (Herald, December 18, 1870). Hedford lived at 652 W. 11th as of 1899. This might be the building of the west half of this house? Building History: William Ford owned this parcel when it was sewered. As of 1955 owner lived here with one apartment and basement apartment. Lawrence Crock first listing for 242 West 11th, 1874, Ms. Mattie McDermott 1875, no listing 1880-1906, William Headford first listed at 244 in 1870, remains to 1905, he was a foreman for Novelty Iron Works (Biays Bowerman research). 9.
