7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1895, Queen Anne style (triple
bays), Vernacular tri-plex plan.
Designer/Builder: John Keenan, contractor, probable architect.
Physical Description: two-story brick side gable rectangular plan with matching side rear ells and
central wing. Raised rusticated stone foundation and plain water table, this is a shorter and gable roof
version of 909-25 Bluff, with three full-height bays that are located just inside each outer corner and to
the right of center so as to allow for a double entry at left center, and single entry right of center,
between the bays. The bays are three-sided, and have shingled gablet caps. Basement windows have
stone lintels that are thickened portions of the water table. Plain stone lintels and sills are used on the
front and side wall windows. The front bay windows have transom lights. Entry canopies are original
and retain scrollwork.
Alterations: concrete stoops, metal railings. No permit data.

Landscaping/Setting: prominent corner parcel at 10 & Bluff, ground rises slightly to the north and
declines to the east, building fronts west with side entrances.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Building History: James Rowan owned the parcel when the block was sewered. Dr. Longworthy built a

$3,000 residence at 10 and Bluff in 1910 (Telegraph-Herald, October 2, 1910). This is the only extant
later building at this location that fits this description.

The Herald reported the demolition of the old Rupert House on the corner of 10 and Bluff, a 40-year
old frame structure and a landmark (sold for salvage for $10.00). An adjoining brick house on the alley
also went down to make way for a new tenement house that was being built by owner Rowan (Herald,
June 21, 1895).
John Keenan, contractor, was excavating for a triple tenement “of modern improvements” as of July 18
(ibid., July 18, 1895).
1897 directory lists J. Rowan at 1010 Bluff; 1898 & 1898 directories list J. Rowan at 1022 Bluff
