Style/Year: pre-1889, Italianate style parapet front duplex. Physical Description: two-story square brick plan and flat roof, bracketed cornice, unusual flat stone arches with key stone and spring stones, windows grouped to outside of each side of the façade, paired and centered entries with no transoms and lowered lintels, built in rear double decker porch, raised stone foundation with two-part water table. *investigate twin roof front gable roof dormers. Alterations: narrow steeply pitched gable roof porch replaced with low profile broader hip porch with square columns and frame covered balustrades. Concrete block retaining wall in front of porch. No permit data. Landscaping/Setting: low terraced parcel, building fronts east. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Building History: L. K. Bowdish, agent for the Home Scale Company, built a brick addition (“a handsome, swell front”) “at the head of Bluff,” in 1878 and is listed as living at 1501 Bluff as of 1880. The Times values the addition at$1,000 (Herald, January 3, 1879; Times, December 11, 1878). Sewer records link Bowdish with the next property north however. Grocer/builder William Rebman lived here 1890-99, and built the following in this area: thth ?two brick dwellings, 40x40 each with L-wings, 28x15, two story bricks, on Bluff between 14 and 15, $1,491 (Herald, November 22, 1874). ?residence on Bluff, $7,000 (Herald, December 31, 1882). ?brick block and residence, $13,000 (Herald, December 20, 1883). thth ?fine double brick tenement on Bluff between 14 and 15, 33x33, two stories, with L 28x28 (Herald, November 9, 1873). He owned the parcel when it was first sewered. 1899 Mrs. Wm Rebman (widow) resides at this address and in 1896 and 1894 1878-1888 L.K. Bowdish at 1501 Bluff 9.
