7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1898 (owner), post-1891, pre-
1909, Classical Revival style stone duplex with twin bays (limestone veneer, square-cut porch, bay,
finished stone foundation).
Designer/Builder: local architect Albert Ney (Grannis)
Physical Description: singular example of a stone-faced duplex, square plan that runs to alley, twin
three-sided frame bays with connecting plain cornice, centered entries and square cut glassed in porch,
no sill or lintel expression, façade horizontally scored, raised smooth finished limestone foundation and
an indentation forms a water table effect.
Alterations: very well preserved. Permits note re-roofing in 1959, 1976, flat roof repair 1971, 1983, re-
siding of rear 1977 (1560).
Landscaping/Setting: site drops to the east, fronts west
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; Albert Ney duplex. Ney was a noted local builder.
Building History: owner recounts that courthouse contractor built this duplex as a residence and rental
property. The Jackson Park Walking Tour dates the duplex to 1898 and credits it to Ney, and
directories place A. Ney in 1560 Iowa 1918-21.
Matthias Flick owned the parcel when it was first sewered.
1901 Albert Ney is at 1560 and H.C. Shpherd is at 1568
