7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1884?, 1892-97, Shingle
style modification of early vernacular two-story side gable duplex plan.
Physical Description: brick rectangular plan with two-story full-width rear wing, double decker porches
in back, walkout basement to south, oriole bay on south side on ground floor, twin front three-sided
bays flank Neo-Classical porch which is set beneath deeply projecting Shingle style gable roof dormer
(with recessed twin light attic window set with rounded side walls), rounded stone lintels with flattened
ends, returned eaves. The south bay is capped with an elongated half-turret /dormer.
Alterations: aluminum siding on pay, exterior painted white, porch replaced c.1910. Permits note re-
roofing in1960 (part), 1969, 1999, porch added 1941, gutters and downspouts 1979 (all 1610), and for
1614, re-roofing 1960 (part), 1973 (part), 1997, concrete block garage re-roof 1961.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: William Rebman built a two-story brick double brick tenement at the corner of
th
16 and Iowa in 1872, at the cost of $7,000 (Herald, November 24, 1872).
Building History: 1897 photo shows modified plan, unpainted.
Arthur M. Downer, a brewer for the Peaslee & Company Brewery, built a $2,000 addition to 1610 in
1880 and it is possible that this involved building the second half (Herald, December 4, 1881). Downer
lived here as of 1890 and owned the parcel when it was first sewered. Another builder candidate is
Henry L. Wiltse, who built a two-story frame 18x30 at 1610 Iowa (Herald, November 22, 1874).
