Narrative Description: This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1891 (1891-93?, local tradition says 1893), Queen Anne style, embodied in turret and dormer (both lost), twin bays, and perhaps Romanesque style reflected in the rustic stone exterior. There are few all stone residences in Dubuque. Designer/Builder: F. D. Hyde, 1890, $18,000, 2.5 story brick and stone, 36x75, slate roof, architect’s list #86. Physical Description: two-story rectangular stone plan with east pavilion and centered entrance, twin south fronting bays, a half-round corner tower with turret cap, and a broader three-sided bay with a gable roof dormer top. The hip roof was highly pitched towards the front of the plan. There is a high raised stone foundation and water tower. The stone is Colorado Red limestone. John Rider Wallis a neighbor termed the style “Romanesque Alfalfa” in 1973. Exotic trim woods include sycamore, butternut, mahogany, and light oak. This house was one of few Dubuque homes with a curbside carriage step. Alterations: house was long notorious for its broad eaves flat roof, but the new roof actually represents the saving of the lower part of the house following a gutting by fire on January 15, 1973, Neo-Classical porch on east end dates to c.1910, deck with metal rail on south side, wholesale window reduction and replacement. Permits note re-roofing in 1966, 1994. Landscaping/Setting: prominent level location north of Jackson Park. Fronts east. Style/Year: 1892-1908, Shingle style brick carriage house. Physical Description: this carriage house appears to have evolved out of twin rectangular stables that served this property and 1640 Main to the west. This half of that set was remodeled to its present state. There is a raised stone foundation and brick main floor with gauged brick straight voussoir arches. There is a broad plain shingled frieze and broad eaves. The roof is a steeply pitched hip form with octagonal cupola with a bellcast turret roof with finial. A north-facing gable roof dormer projects beyond a subordinate hay loft bay that in turn projects above two massive shingled brackets. A small east dormer has a bellcast front and deep projecting eaves and shingled front. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; Thomas and Ellen Connolly mansion. Connolly was a noted carriage/wagon manufacturer. Original Owner/Builder: Connolly’s $15,000 residence is reported in the Herald (January 18, 1891) so the house apparently dates to 1890-91, and the 1891 Sanborn Map is marked “being built.” rd Building History: Connolly’s son Maurice was distinguished for his election as a Democrat to the 3 District U.S. House seat in 1912. He was defeated in a Senate run two years later and died in a plane Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs State Historical Society of Iowa 31-01674 Site Number Iowa Site Inventory Form Related District Number Continuation Sheet Page 2 Thomas & Ellen Connolly mansion Dubuque Name of Property County 1637 Iowa Dubuque Address City crash in 1921. Realtor Joseph Nagle bought the house in 1923 and he sold it a few years later to William Hansen. John A. Nagel, Joseph’s son, repurchased it. Arthur Nagle is credited with saving what survived from a 1973 fire. Ecumenical Housing Inc. had an option on the property and wanted to build a high-rise unit for low income elderly residents. Nagle convinced the City Council to give him a month to start work (April 17, 1973) and got a building permit to do the work on May 14, barely meeting the deadline. Arthur Nagle unrelated to Joseph. The house had been vacant for years prior to the fire (the newspaper warned in 1972 that “little time remains” for the house) and its use was hindered by a claimed covenant that restricted the property to single-family use. Nagle’s attorney discounted the existence of such a restriction but newspaper accounts stated that it was somehow amended to allow two-family usage (Telegraph-Herald, June 5, 25, 1972; January 15, May 14, 1973). The sewer tap date is July 17, 1919. 9.
