7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1889, two-story side gable
brick vernacular duplex modified c.1890 in the Shingle style (front dormer, shingled eaves), and the
Neo Classical c.1910 with the addition of the full-width front porch.
Physical Description: this and the property to the northwest (364-66) were originally identical duplex
plans certainly built by the same designer/builder. The original plan was that of a side-gable duplex
one with the eaves continued over the end walls, double rowlock brick arches, symmetrical fenestration
(2/2 lights some of which survive on the ground floor). Window arches are of double brick rowlock
construction. There is a raised stone foundation and there was (1891) a small centered porch or
canopy that was in front of the paired, centered entries (with transoms). The porch with its round
columns and unusual ornamental stuccoed porch piers, dates to c.1910. The transformation into a
shingle style house added a through cornice gable roof dormer with Palladian-like window grouping,
and a corbelled and bracketed base, and the replacement of eaves brackets with a textured wood
shingle covering. The dormer also features an open king post truss infilling and decorative modillions.
Alterations: dormer, eaves and porch. Permits note re-roofing in 1987 (half), 1991 (half).
Landscaping/Setting: the parcel ground level rises slightly to the west, the house fronts northeast, the
porch foundation wall, stuccoed, serves as a retaining wall.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Original Owner/Builder: James G. Murry built a double frame house in 1883, at which time he lived at
46 West Locust—the cost was $3,500-if the frame reference was in error and refers to this address,
then this refers to this property (Herald, December 20, 1883). Murray was Deputy County Auditor at
the time.
Building History: J. G. Peterson built “two double brick tenements each 36x29 with wings of 16x22, two
th
stories, $6,000” at the corner of Locust and 17 streets in 1869. This is a good candidate to one of
these duplexes (Herald, December 16, 1869). This building appears on the 1872 birds eye overview.
This could be 345 W. Locust as well. Peterson lived at 60 West Locust as of 1893, which is 378-80
today. He owned the parcel when it was first sewered.
