Peterson residence Dubuque Name of Property County 396 West Locust Dubuque Address City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1891, older duplex remodeled to Shingle style c.1895 (dormer, modillions and open king post trust, shingled gable end walls, modillions, Eastlake style porch). Designer/Builder: John Mullany (Jr.?), architect. Physical Description: compare the Palladian-like front dormer light set to 364-66 West Locust, presumably a single owner modified all three vernacular plans to a Shingle style during the 1890s. Two-story side gable brick rectangular plan on raised stone foundation, with enlarged basement window stone lintels that are incorporated into the foundation cap, symmetrical fenestration with a paired upper front center window, double rowlock brick rounded window arches that have raised brick tracings that abut twin parallel belt courses that encircle the plan on both floors at the spring stone and lintel points. Another belt course links the sill levels on both floors. The present roof has a broad overhanging eaves with modillions and twin end lights and a shingled gable end front. A wood belt course underscores the cornice and forms a pediment on each end. A broad gable roof centered front dormer has an open truss infill, modillions and a shingled front. Of particular interest is the Palladian- like window set with flattened arch tops. Chimneys are on each end wall peak. A pedimented entry porch is of early date or original and has side wooden open balustrades and Eastlake like trim work. There is a sunburst motif in the pediment front. Alterations: dormer, roof, perhaps the porch. Permits note re-roofing in 1934. 1939, 1963, 1995. Landscaping/Setting: triangular corner location, fronts northeast. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; J. G. Peterson residence Original Owner/Builder: Peterson built a $5,000 residence in 1890 and lived at this address at the time (60 West Locust). This is presumably that house (Herald, January 19, 1891). He also built a two-story brick dwelling on Locust for $2,000 in 1886 (ibid., January 1, 1887). He owned the parcel when it was sewered. Building History: The Jackson Park Walking Tour links this house c.1880 to John Mullany, builder/architect. He was the son of the John Mullany who designed St. Raphaels Cathedral and St. Marys Church. According to the chart this is not 60 West Locust; 380 was 60 West Locust; in 1890 Mullany lived at 45 Alpine. H E E B S T R E E T M A D I S O N S T R E E T T E RE T S H T 17 IO W .
