Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; Frank D. Stout House, Stout was a partner in H. L. & F. D. Stout, president and treasurer of the Nutwood Park Company (race course/ park), president of the Star Electric Company, vice-president of Iowa Trust & Savings Bank, Dubuque Fire & Insurance Company, and assistant treasurer for Knapp-Stout Lumber Company at the time he built this mansion. Upon the death of his father Henry in 1900 Frank moved his family to Chicago and donated the land across the street from his house for the building of the library (Carnegie-Stout). Original Owner/Builder: Frank Deming Stout built this $75,000 residence in 1890. The construction took some time given a mid-1893 report that H. L. Stout’s residence was nearly completed, being “in all ways a magnificent structure” (Herald, January 18, 1891; Telegraph, June 16, 1893). Building History: James Beach owned the parcel when it was sewered. The house was purchased as a gift residence for Archbishop James Keane in 1911. He signed the property over to the Archdiocese in 1912. Archbishop Francis Beckman was the last resident occupant and the house was transformed into an office complex and the house was used as the chancery for the archdiocese in 1939. Archbisop Daniel was the last resident occupant. Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs State Historical Society of Iowa 31-0 Site Number Iowa Site Inventory Form Related District Number Continuation Sheet Page 2 Frank D. Stout House Dubuque Name of Property County 1105 Locust Dubuque Address City Archbishop Henry Rohlman restored the house and resided there and added the west end office wing. By 1984 the house was a residence with just two occupants and Archbishop Daniel Kucera sold it to a group of 19 investors who used it as a bed and breakfast . Loras College was first approached by Kucera for possible use as a museum. The sheer survival of this mansion as well as its splendid state of preservation is attributable to its fortunate church ownership. As of 1891, two mansions shared this entire block (Historic Houses File, File F-1, Center For Dubuque History; Telegraph-Herald, August 15, 1985). From 1911-1985 all the archbishops resided in this house. The “grand opening” of this “palace of splendour” took place in late 1894 (Telegraph, September 29, 1894). (this is the H.L. Stout house not the Frank Stout house) Stout added servants’ quarters and an addition in 1897 and a new livery stable (Mullen Bros. did the plumbing) in 1899. In 1896 $3,000 was expended in internal decorating, principally fresco work (Herald, May 24, 1896; January 5, 1898; Telegraph, May 28, 1899). 9.
