7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1880-81, two-story Queen
Anne/Stick Style design that is of particular interest given its relative early date.
Physical Description: two-story brick rectangular plan (35x30 core with 16x6 side wing), with south wing
over a bay, and unusual rear plan side wing to the south, raised stone foundation and water table, also
singular is the use of a more ornate stone lintel with spring stone and rounded pediment, while the
upper lintels are much simpler, set flush, and incorporated into a lintel level stone belt course. The
same paneled stone belt course encircles the ground floor at the spring stone level. The windows are
narrow and elongated. The cut corners on the bay are framed with joined open truss brackets. All of
the gable fronts are splayed at their bases in concave fashion, and the upper gable end is infilled and
has a stick motif. Vertical boards with rounded butts covers the surface of the southern gable end, and
the same material forms a frieze beneath the eaves around the entire plan. The entrance is set to the
left front. The shallow hip roof porch is apparently original with square posts, joined brackets, pendants
and decorative grilles. The front dormer is massive, reflecting the high pitch of the hip roof. It is an
internal dormer and the dormer front combines a triple light attic window set, a stick style front and yet
another single attic light. The gable front is infilled and supported by brackets, lower larger brackets
support cross-set open corner frames. There are two cropped chimneys. An elaborate and glassed in
single story porch infills the plan on the south side, between the two south-facing wings. Basement
windows have uncommon stone voussoir arches that are set below the water table. Three chimneys
and four fireplaces. Front porch 6x20. Rear wing offset, 34x21 with recessed side porch 19x5.
Alterations: very well preserved, windows replaced and chimneys cropped. Permits note re-roofing in
1948, 1978, 1995, enclose back porch 1975, rebuild deck over garage 1991, handrails, cover transoms
1996.
Landscaping/Setting: corner parcel that drops somewhat to the east.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; Ephraim M. Woodworth House, SHSI calls it the Bainbridge House, Grannis
credits it to Ezekiel Woodworth.
Original Owner/Builder: Woodworth lived on this block front as of 1865-66. He started this residence in
1880 ($4,000 expended, “part done”), and finished it the next year ($6,000) along with a $500 stable
(Herald, January 1, December 4, 1881). The 1897 Souvenir Gems shows the J. W. Woodward
residence, an almost exact copy of this design, apparently two brothers obtained near identical plans.
The other house had a scrollwork-covered porch, and it is probable that this one did as well.

W. H. Robinson, dealer in boots and shoes, laid a foundation at the corner of 13 and Locust in 1881
for $800 (Herald, December 4, 1881). His name was not found in directories.
Building History: Ephraim M. Woodworth owned the parcel when it was sewered.
