Library Board of Trustees Update

June 2009 concluded FY09 and during the month of July the final financial
reports were received. We were able to carry over $44,000 which will be used
toward new materials in preparation for our “Grand Opening” next year. With
this carryover, we came in 2% under budget for FY 09.

The year closed with record use:
Circulation up 6%

Reference questions up 10%
o
New cards issued up 10%
o
# of visitors up 3%
o
# of volunteer hours up 31%
o
Circulation of lap top computers up 57%
o
Internet Room use up 8%
o

Final walk through for Phase Two – First Floor is scheduled for September 10.
After that the Adult non-fiction that is located on the west side of the first floor
Carnegie building will be moved into this area to clear space for Phase Three. We
will seek estimates from a library moving company to move the collection. Their
equipment can move entire ranges of books without packing.

The carpeting installed in the staff work area is not what we selected and what
was specified. Options will be discussed over the next two weeks.

Staff Development Day evaluations and the outcome of the Summer Reading
Program for Youth and Adult were shared with the board. Some of this
information follows:
2,638 kids signed up with 1,302 completing
o
667 people attended the end of the program party at Flora Pool
o
440 teens signed up with 220 completing
o
65 attended the end of the program party
o
116 adults signed up with 69 completing
o
All records were broken in Summer Reading at a most challenging time.

A proposal was submitted to the Board to provide some type of amnesty program
for fines in recognition of the inconvenience that patrons have been experiencing
using the building since the streets have been closed and torn up. The board
agreed to this, but not to exceed 10 days in two months.

The Board discussed the City Council making the Library staffing a priority in the
coming budget year.

The Board asked if there was interest in checking out video games; Susan will
follow up on this and report next month.

The Board reviewed the logo designs and decided to go with concept that the
majority of staff voted on with a request for the designer to submit a few
revisions.

The Library was awarded a certificate of accreditation for the next three years.
