7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: pre-1891, Italianate style
(bracketed cornice, south bay).
Physical Description: two-story brick square core plan with south full-height frame bay (stepped back at
second floor level), double bracketed cornice that incorporates bay top and has a broad projection,
raised stone foundation with water table, metal pediment lintels and sills, single-story rear wing that
projects to the north. Left side double entry, minimal symmetrical fenestration, centered front attic
window, rounded side window. Some 2/2 windows on bay upper level. No porch shown as of 1891.
Alterations: entry has aluminum door infill, side door/window bricked in (south), lower level of bay
covered with small square tile, windows replaced. Concrete stoop. Permits note re-roofing in 1943,
1973 (part), 1987, 1994, 2000, remodel brick dwelling 1940, convert to business building 1975
($5,000). The house has gained a south bay, lost a wrap-around porch (south and east fronts), lost an
upper front window and lost a Neo-Classical balustrade surround atop its roof.
Landscaping/Setting: ground drops slightly to the east, fronts west, on prominent corner triangular lot
where Bluff joins Locust. Low retaining wall and metal fence.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; Noble C. and Fannie [Smith] Ryder House. Ryder was a founder of Carr, Ryder &
Adams millwork company and Mrs. Ryder served for many years as a company director.
Original Owner/Builder: Photographer Sam Root took a picture of this house c.1885-88 and captioned it
the “Mrs. Fannie Ryder Home” so the photo post-dated Noble Ryder’s death. The couple married in
1860 and Nobel Ryder first worked as a grain dealer. Mrs. Ryder survived her husband and all three of
their children, dying in 1931, while still a resident of this house. He obituary noted her “deep interest” in
the city’s growth and her having “materially assisted in its growth” (Telegraph-Herald, February 22,
1931).
Building History: N. C. Ryder made $3,000 in improvements to his resident in 1882, his widow lived
here as of 1893 (Herald, December 31, 1882). Ryder owned the parcel when it was sewered, the tap
date being March 14, 1911.
