7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1878, 1888, c.1900-05 the
original building was a two-story gable front side hall plan, modified to Queen Anne style with twin
towers in 1888, and the Neo-Classical style c.1900 with the addition of a temple front and south porch
wing.
Designer/Builder: B. W. Jones, original builder.
Physical Description: the house starts off as a gable front square two-story brick plan (35x34) with an
offset rear wing (1884 Sanborn Map, 55x26). By 1891 the plan was substantially enlarged to a square
front core with the present elongated two-story rear wing. An 1897 engraving shows a broad gable
front plan with a centered south bay (4x12), a hip roof north wing or roof ridge, the twin towers (15x11,
9x11) and a shallow front porch (9x23) set between the towers. The present building has a raised
stone foundation, water table, and brick exterior. There are two round towers, the northeast corner one
has a clapboard exterior on the third floor and an onion dome and finial cap. The other, on the
southeast corner, has a brick attic level and a steeply pointed turret and finial. The classical temple
front has Corinthian columns, an open second floor porch, a pedimented gable front with modillions,
dentils, a narrow clapboard cladding and a lunette window with keystone. The south porch wing has an
open second story, the same columns and the same cornice treatment. The original south bay and hip
roof dormer cap survives just behind the added wing. The back of the original house shows a double
bracket supported cornice and a rounded attic light. The rear wing has the same metal or stone lintels
as are found on 1301 Main to the south, and rear (alley) windows have double rowlock brick arches.
Alterations: The south porch lower level has been enclosed. Permits note re-roofing in 1932, 1979,
addition 1947 ($400), roof repair 1957, re-roof 4x36 balcony 1992 and remodel interior ($138,000),
concrete exterior stairs and walls 1992.
Landscaping/Setting: The property has a moderate terrace. The house fronts east.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; Charles H. Eighmey residence, Eighmey was president of the First National Bank
(Dubuque of Today, 1897, Sommer, pp. 101-02, Gebhart, p. 87).
Original Owner/Builder: The demolition of existing buildings on the site began in mid-March 1877 “to
make room for the creation of the new ones” (Herald, March 18, 1878). Eighmey appears to have
added the towers c.1888 to an 1869 core building and that configuration with angled and centered front
porch is shown on the 1889 birds eye view and the 1891 Sanborn Map. By 1909 the house to the
south was gone and the present enlarged configuration in place.
Building History: The following is found for this property:

lived at this address and was a bank cashier (Herald, December 13, 1868).

The Telegraph-Herald, August 6, 1933 1870s walking tour of Main states “South of Fourteenth street on
the west side are several brick houses (still standing) the first occupied by Hon. W. J. Knight, the others
by T. P. Rood, C. H. Eighmey and Dr. Asa Horr.” Eighmey owned the parcel when it was sewered.
Eleven units here as of 1971.
