7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1878, Queen Anne style
(tower/turret, bay, mixed cladding materials, rounded wrap-around porch).
Physical Description: this very unusual design mimics the row house but adds a prominent corner
feature, virtually half of a double house with a substitute wrap-around porch and tower. Rectangular
core (36x24) with north wing (5x17), L-porch (27x16), centered rear wing 39x19’6”). The façade is
blank save for a three-sided bay (4’6”x12) with cornice and parapet cap. The entry is a side one, at the
tower base and the rounded porch wraps around to the front of the rear wind north-fronting side bay.
The stone lintels are ornate yet set flush and might represent a grinding off of any projections. The
lintels have flattened tops, a keystone cap and wrap-around ends/keystones. The tower combines
wood shingling with flared panel bases, bands with rosettes at each lintel level, and a flared concave
porch roof base. The plain paneled parapet appears to be original, there is a bell cast tower turret top.
The porch with square posts and gridded upper grille and balustrade, appear to be original.
Alterations: well preserved. Permits note re-roofing in 1936, 1975, rear porch repair 1975, remove and
replace rear porch 1979, replace fire damaged joists 1983 ($400), re-roof front porch roof 1997, roof
repairs and repair north metal wall area 1997.
Landscaping/Setting: level lot with west-fronting building.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; Mrs. H. A. Littleton residence

Original Owner/Builder: Mrs. A. Littleton built a $5,000 brick house on Main between 13 and 14, in
1878 (Times, December 22, 1878; Herald, January 3, 1879). The widow Mrs. Littleton lived at this
address as of 1880.
Building History: The Telegraph-Herald, August 6, 1933 1870s walking tour of Main states “On the east
side (at the corner of Fourteenth street) is the house occupied by R. E. Graves, president of the
Commercial National Bank (now the home of Mrs. Paine). The house next south of this is the home of
Dr. Samuel Guilbert and south of this, a space since occupied by the present three-story brick
residence. Following this is the house occupied by J. G. Bailey (long since dead, whose family is now
living in Los Angeles). The next house on the corner, was built and occupied by Arthur McCann (this
building with additions is now the Dideach Funeral Home [1338 Main].” Dr. Samuel Guilbert owned the
parcel when it was sewered. Four apartments and 5 sleeping rooms as of 1971.
