7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1871, broad two-story
vernacular gable front brick residence.
Physical Description: broad eaves, attic lights, symmetrical fenestration, left hand entrance. One or two
north fronting bays. Rectangular core 34x26, wraparound porch 9x12, bay in northwest corner (4x10),
north bay (3x6), three single-story rear brick additions measure 33’ in depth, 36 wide and extend south
17’ beyond main house. Attached concrete block garage in southeast corner (9x21). One fireplace.
Alterations: permastone cladding (“stucco over brick”), flat porch with metal railings, replacement
windows. Permits note re-roofing in 1949, 1991 (erection of pitched roof, repairs), 1996, alterations
1939, re-face 1953 ($4,800), repair porch and roof 1970, replace exterior steps 2000, replace damaged
soffit, fascia 1892, repair porch railings and roof 1984.
Landscaping/Setting: parcel ground level drops to the east, house fronts west.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; Henry Kingman residence
Original Owner/Builder: Kingman built a brick residence, next to R. E. Graves’ house at the corner of
th
Main and 14 Street, the house measured 26x34 with a wing and cost $5,000. The Herald (December
17, 1871) called it “fine” and still “unfinished” costing $6,000 (Tribune, December 20, 1871). The Times
counted it as being credited to 1872, describing it as two-stories, brick, 34x26, for $3,000 (November
23, 1872). This house and Graves are the only ones shown on this side of Main on this block in the
1872 birds eye view.
Building History: The Telegraph-Herald, August 6, 1933 1870s walking tour of Main states “On the east
side (at the corner of Fourteenth street) is the house occupied by R. E. Graves, president of the
Commercial National Bank (now the home of Mrs. Paine). The house next south of this is the home of
Dr. Samuel Guilbert and south of this, a space since occupied by the present three-story brick
residence. Following this is the house occupied by J. G. Bailey (long since dead, whose family is now
living in Los Angeles). The next house on the corner, was built and occupied by Arthur McCann (this
building with additions is now the Dideach Funeral Home.” Dr. Samuel Guilbert owned the parcel when
it was sewered.
