7. Narrative Description:
This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1871, Second Empire style
(concave mansard roof, denticulated and bracketed eaves). Note the preserved elongated lower level
windows.
Physical Description: two-story brick L-plan with north rear wing (rectangular core 41x28, north wing
18x12), two-story centered rear wing(22x24), all subsumed under a true Mansard roof, plain frieze and
denticulated/ bracketed cornice. The stone window lintels are wrap-around with key and spring stones.
Fenestration is symmetrical. The plan is that of a side hall with left side front entry. There is a bay
(9x3) of undetermined height on the center of the south side wing. The elongated front attic light set is
a consolidation of two separate round original attic dormers. Raised stone foundation with water table
at sill level, which is unusual. There is a single-story brick south addition on the rear wing, a 16x17 rear
addition and an attached concrete block garage (26x26). Two fireplaces.
Alterations: attic front light, painted brick, masonry entry vestibule. Permits note re-roofing in 1939,
1969, 1985 (flat roof), 1993 (including erection of pitched roof over front entrance), construct two story
brick and tile residential addition 1937 ($2,000), rear addition 1956 ($1,300), erect entrance 1964,
repair damage to entrance 1967.
Landscaping/Setting: property ground level drops to the east, prominent corner lot, house fronts west.
Cast iron fence.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Special Significance; R. E. Graves residence.
Original Owner/Builder:Graves built this “handsome brick residence, 40x40, including addition on the
th
rear, two stories with Mansard French Architecture, $15,000” at Main and 14 in 1871. It was nearly
finished at years end (Tribune, December 20, 1871; Herald, December 17, 1871). The Times reports it
for 1872, giving ell measurement of 24x40 (Times, November 23, 1872).
Building History: Mrs. Bertha Gurnee added a two-story brick addition in 1937 (Telegraph-Herald, May
9, 1937). The 1884 Sanborn shows the plan with a French roof notation.
The Telegraph-Herald, August 6, 1933 1870s walking tour of Main states “On the east side (at the
corner of Fourteenth street) is the house occupied by R. E. Graves, president of the Commercial
National Bank (now the home of Mrs. Paine). The house next south of this is the home of Dr. Samuel
Guilbert and south of this, a space since occupied by the present three-story brick residence. Following
this is the house occupied by J. G. Bailey (long since dead, whose family is now living in Los Angeles).
The next house on the corner, was built and occupied by Arthur McCann (this building with additions is
now the Dideach Funeral Home.” Frank D. Stout owned the parcel when it was sewered. Four large
apartments as of 1971.
