Van Duzee Dubuque Name of Property County 1471 Main Dubuque Address City 7. Narrative Description: This property is located in the Jackson Park Historic District. Style/Year: 1881? (Grannis) 1872-73, Italianate style two-story gable front brick L-plan (paneled frieze and bracketed eaves, rounded attic light). Designer/Builder: Fridolin Heer, Sr., architect (Telegraph-Herald, April 23, 1933). Physical Description: raised stone foundation with water table, south wing symmetrical fenestration, rounded stone lintels with flattened ends, half-round attic stone lintel, stone sills, possible pressed metal frieze and cornice with repeated diamond motif and intersecting angled lines. Left hand entry. South fronting single story three-sided bay on wing. Two-story rear brick addition. Alterations: bricked in transom, metal canopy replaces porch or hood of similar scale (1909 map shows a corner rounded wrap-around porch of small scale), replaced windows, extra front attic light cut into front with jack arch, stone lintel. Metal posts and rail on porch and steps. Nomination photo shows square cut classical style porch with columns, stair and porch balustrade. Permits note re-roofing in 1950, 1964 (part), 1965 (part), 1987, roof repairs to roof and chimneys 1938, conversion of dwelling to four-plex 1946 ($400), doorway alterations 1957, rear addition 1958. Landscaping/Setting: level site, cast iron fence, fronts east. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; Alonzo J. Van Duzee, prominent attorney and Clerk of Court for the Northeast Iowa U.S. District. Original Owner/Builder: one of three new mansions on this side of the block, finished in 1872-73, this one being the northernmost, no name offered in account, cost $9,000 (Times, November 9, 1873). Building History: The Telegraph-Herald, August 6, 1933 1870s walking tour of Main locates the residence of A. J. Van Duzee to the south of what became the Young house. (Jackson Park Walking Tour). Van Duzee owned the parcel when it was sewered. 1899 – Van Duzee at this address 9.
