Landscaping/Setting: level parcel, low concrete retaining wall, fronts east. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Special Significance; Joseph Herod duplex. Original Owner/Builder: Joseph Herod built a 2.5 story double brick residence in 1885 for $8,000. He lived at this address as of 1893-94 at which time he was a realtor (Times, January 20, 1886). This is confirmed by the Telegraph-Herald, August 6, 1933, which locates this house next to and south of a corner garden, “a double brick house owned by Mr. Joseph Herod, who occupied the north half while the south half is the home of Rev. Joel S. Bingham, whose admirable horsemanship does not interfere with his duties as the beloved pastor of the Congregational church.” Herod had built an earlier house at this address in 1869, it was described as a two-story brick residence (not a duplex), 24x37 with 16x22 rear wing, that cost $4,000. Frick was the builder and the house matched that of Mary Wilson (Herald, December 16, 1869) (Mary Wilson occupied 1699 as of 1890). The Times specifically places that house on this corner and adds that it was a “fine two-story residence with conservatory and attic, concomitants pertaining to a modern first class residence,” but the cost was given as $12,000 (Times, December 18, 1870). Reconciling all three of these accounts suggests that a single residence was started in 1869, finished in 1870 and doubled as a duplex in 1885. Further investigation is required. Building History: Mary Wilson owned the parcel when it was sewered, the tap date being July 14, 1925. 1899 J. Herod listed at 1671; Mrs. M.
