Narrative Description: Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements: Italianate style two-story brick L-plan, hip roof, cornice, wrap around stone lintels, single-story frame insert in front (right side) of L, brick garage in front, wrap around porch, elongated floor-length Italianate windows on ground floor front. An unusual feature is the lack of windows on the north side wall and the north and west fronts of the rear wing. Physical Description: Imposing square plan with parapet front (triangular pediment added post-1897), symmetrical fenestration with central hall (double doors transformed into windows?). Alterations: Porch is so nice it must be a very fine replacement (porch as of 1890s was full-width narrow design with unevenly spaced columns but 1909 map shows this profile), garage wing and apartment addition added to back of plan, dormers added to front and south roof, three chimneys removed (two from rear wall, one from north wall), rear L-porch in southwest corner replaced. Outbuildings: Garage (narrow clapboard, stone or stucco foundation), 1900, 14x24 (brick attached garage) Landscaping Notes: House fronts east near bluff edge with back to the west, garage set forward to the street Evaluation: House surveyed by Kriviskey in 1979, rated “2” as an excellent example of the transition from the Italianate to the Queen Anne style, quite rare. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: The original builder has not yet been identified. Mayor J. W. C. Saunders lived here as of the late 1890s.
