Second Empire two-story frame plan, nice dormers with rounded caps, gable roof pavilion entry, cut
stone foundation, 8-unit apartment, unusual triple dormer set with rounded flat topped hoods
Physical Description:
55x41 core, centered front porch, 5x12, two-story rear wing, east wing/bay, braided corner trim on bay,
concrete porch deck and piers, two cut back east chimneys, one in rear of plan
Alterations:
Porch deck and piers, resided, windows replaced.
Building Permits:
1941-convert barn to four-car garage
1946-Board of Adjustment petition to convert garage into dwellings
1994-remodel
Outbuildings:

Historical Notes:
Maurice and Anna Brown own property when sewered, 1910.
Brown likely built an earlier house unless the date for this one is wrong, is here as early as 1867. Need
to check since only Brown address listing is for 348 Seminary and this is 306.
Maurice Brown improves residence, $5,000 (Herald, January 3, 1879).
Sewer Records:
1910 sewer records show owner as Maurice and Anna Brown lots 84 & 85
Railroad contractor Maurice Brown listed 1873, 2 houses west of Madison.
Herman Sauer, south side of Seminary, 5 west of Madison, builds 1.5-story Gothic brick with basement,
$2,500 (Herald, September 5, 1867).
See Herman Sauer who had new house as of 1870, six rooms, grapevines, greenhouse, south side of
Seminary 5 houses west of Madison (Herald, May 11, 1870) Listed at same 1873,not found 1883.
City Directory Notes:
1867, Morris Brown on south side Seminary west of Madison, is railroad contractor 1868-73, as
capitalist 1880-83. Maurice Brown, capitalist, at 348 Seminary 1884, Widow Mrs. Maurice Brown at
348 Seminary with son Maurice E., 1886, bookkeeper Maurice Brown, assistant bank cashier, Iowa
Trust & Savings, there 1890-94, same with Thos. C. and Agnes Lawler 1899 (348).

Historical Image Notes:
The 1872 bird’s eye view appears to show this house.
The 1909 Sanborn map shows a Second Empire plan (348 Seminary) with offset rear wing and east
bays on both of these elements, along with a broader rear east side porch. A matching two-story
carriage house was in the southwest corner of the lot. The land to the east was undeveloped.
1909/36 Sanborn shows a rectangular three-story core, full-width front porch, an offset two-story rear
wing, two-story rear porch and an unusual single-story east side rear wing.
The 1964 map shows as apartments with a rear balcony and stairs, the same front porch, and the same
east addition. The same garage was present.
