7. Narrative Description:
Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements:
Italianate style, two-story brick hip roof with parapet surround, with centered gable roof entry porch,
straight stone lintels, five bay front, paired and centered side wall windows, two chimneys at each end
wall corner, two-story rear wing, raised stone foundation and water table.
Physical Description:
32x42 core, centered rear 20x22 wing, unusual trim panels to left of entry
Alterations:
Porch is later date replacement, 1909 Sanborn shows wraparound porch extending to west side.
Building Permit Cards:
1938- remodel dwelling into four apartments-owners: Carl Danglemeyer-contractor: A Basten-$750
erect brick garage
1997- tear off and rebuild two porches-owner: Pete Corby-contractor: John Jamison-$3700
Outbuildings:
1.5-story gable front brick garage, multi-paneled transom, entry enlarged, concrete foundation, 18x24
Landscaping Notes:
Corner Summit and Fenelon, slightly recessed yard, old wrought iron fence, drive to west
Evaluation:
Key building. House surveyed by Kriviskey in 1979, rated “2” as an excellent example of a relatively
uncommon style” highly visible, termed it Federal Style.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Historical Notes:
T. C. Roberts laid foundation in 1868, (Herald, 12-13-68), same to build $4,000 residence 1869 (Times,
rd
1-1-69). Herald places attorney Roberts on west side of Summit between Fenelon and 3, “this season
lays foundation for elegant residence, has leveled grounds and surrounded it with a stone wall, barn
$800, iron fence $1,500, stone wall, $1,500. Fine barn and other improvements “on site where intends
to build a costly residence this summer to cost $4,000” (Times, January 1, 1869).
Another candidate is E. W. Deitrich who built a $6,500 brick mansion at the corner of Fenelon and
Sommerset (Summit?) in 1857-early 1858.
1873 directory places Francis M. Pleins (Pleins & Beach, vice pres. German Savings Bank) on this
corner.

Historical Image Notes:
The 1909 Sanborn map shows the house as a broad rectangular plan with front cornice and a wrap-
around porch. There is an offset two-story rear wing and an inset corner rear porch (152 Fenelon).
The 1909/36 Sanborn map shows the same, and adds a garage in the southwest corner of the lot with
a buried gasoline tank, and two sheds to the east.
