SUBJECT: Trail at Bergfeld Recreation Area Project
DATE: September 23, 2009
Attached is change order 1 for the Trail at the Bergfeld Recreation Area Project. The
sheet outlines the three parts of the change order with the largest part, $21,300, to
install six inch sub drain with bedding stone. This will help dry out a very wet area to
allow for construction and will then keep the area dry in the future.
After a very wet late summer, construction is moving along nicely and completion is
expected by mid-November.
Please sign the change order and return it to me.
Thanks!

CHANGE ORDER
Change Order No: 1

Agreement Date: August 17, 2009

Contractor Drew Cook Excavarin

Pro'ect: Trail Pro'ect at Ber feld Recreation Area N 0
2. Add a bid item for Stabilization Stone, 3" to 6" Clean Stone: Contract unit price of $17.25/Ton.
Unit price includes core out. Quantity will be the quantity determined by the weight tickets, when
placed at locations as approved by the Engineer. Basis of payment shall be by the tons installed.
Estimated quantity to be 100 tons for an estimated cost of $1,725.00.
ADD: $1, 725.00.
3. Add a bid item for Six Inch (6") Subdrain with Bedding Stone: Contract unit price of 17.75/LF.
Unit price includes all materials and labor to install the subdrain at locations as approved by the
Engineer. Anticipated locations are from Station 20+00 to 31+00. The installation will require 4
outlets. The outlets shall be installed in accordance with the Iowa DOT Standard Road Plan RF-
19F. The total estimated cost is $21,300.00. The basis of payment shall be the linear foot installed.
ADD: $21, 300.00
Justification for Change:
1. The Contractor is placing base stone in two lifts, a larger gradation as the first lift allows
construction traffic to transport and place the second lift with less rutting of the first lift than if''/a"
base stone was used.
2. This material will serve as a "French Drain: to allow seepage from the hillside to drain under the
pavement and reduce the pavement susceptibility to freeze thaw. This material also provides
stabilization of the trail. The original stabilization stone bid was not clean enough material to allow
the continued drainage.
3. Side hill seepage is present at several locations. This will allow the water to be intercepted prior to
reaching the trail to allow the subgrade to stay firm, Subdrain outlets will allow the water to have
an outlet and be transported away from the trail base. After the trail is paved this will keep the
material under the trail from being saturated and susceptible to distortion under traffic. This need
was made evident since the site is still wet after 2 weeks without rain.

The amount of the contract will be Increased by this change order by the sum of
Twenty four thousand five hundred twenty five dollars and zero cents. $24,525.00
