Narrative Description: Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements: Italianate style brick hip roof plan (26x40) with nearly full-width front early porch 96x38), slightly rounded stone lintels with corner shoulders, paired corner and single brackets, denticulated cornice, fenestration asymmetrical but vertically aligned, looks line north section was added and matched a pre- existing side hall plan (left side entry). Unusual and rarely preserved metal cresting on porch. Physical Description: Stone foundation, single-story rear frame wing (12x29) and attached rear garage Alterations: Possible side-hall plan enlarged? Building Permit Cards: 1950 – addition to rear of SF frame dwelling--owner: Al Finch- contractor: Joe Lukens. 1993 – erect 28x22 attached frame garage-$12,500-owner: Milton Johnson-contractor: M & W Construct. Outbuildings: Colonial Revival style play house, pool (1950, 10x22), deck Landscaping Notes: Driveway to east, land drops away to the east, fronts west. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Evaluation: House surveyed by Kriviskey in 1979, rated “2” as having “architectural quality” and an “interesting blend of styles.” Historical Notes: th Alpheus Palmer builds barn, east side Summit, 3 south of 5, (Herald12-16-69). John Klein owns when sewered. City Directory Notes: (104 Summit) th Palmer lives on west side of Summit between 5 & Fenelon in 1868 (not listed 1867), at 104 Summit th 1873, second barn (H-12-18-70). 1873-74 directory places Palmer at third house south of West 5, with the Mattox family to the south. Note the carriage house visible at the right, also the plank sidewalk and fence. Historical Image Notes: An 1897 photo (Souvenir Gems of Dubuque), shows as 104 Summit with present porch, no rear addition, frame carriage house to the south. The 1909 Sanborn map shows the house as 104 Summit, with a broad front porch and an offset two- story square wing on the northeast corner. A two-story carriage house is shown to the southeast of the house. The 1909/36 Sanborn map shows the same. 9.
