Narrative Description: Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements: Second Empire style two-story stone duplex, four front dormers, true mansard roof, oversized straight stone lintels, grouped front entries, centered half-width double-decker porch, entries have double doors Physical Description: 33x44 core, 16x8 porch, 2/2 lights, actually a single story plan with front walkout Alterations: Side walls stuccoed, capped chimneys on southeast and southwest corners, rear deck added Building Permit Cards: 1993-retaining wall 1995- new roof, siding-$4655-owner: Sheldon Allendorf-contractor: Home Doctors Outbuildings: None Landscaping Notes: Terrace shelf, land open to the east, concrete front steps Evaluation: House surveyed by Kriviskey in 1979, rated "2" as a rare example of the use of Dubuque stone with modifications that have achieved significance in their own right." Suggests Manard roof is later addition to an earlier plan. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: An original owner has not been identified. The 1850 building date is suspect, unless this house was remodeled into its present style. Historical Notes: 1873 directory places sash maker John A. Byrne and Mrs. Theresa M. Byrne 3 houses west of Summit; Carpenter Michael J. King at same; and contractor John Fortune 4 houses west of Summit (not found in directories). Michael J. King, capitalist, sells 329 West 3rd to Edward J. Phillips (Bailiff, District Court), for $1,400. Phillips was a brother of Sheriff Phillips (Herald, June 20, 1892).
