As a Vietnam Era Navy veteran, former Dubuque County Veteran Affairs commissioner (five years), the daughter of a Korean War vet and the mother of an Army veteran and current Marine Corps reservist, I speak from experience when I say that supporting the troops can and should be kept separate from the issue of whether or not we should go to war. I urge the City Council to pass this resolution. I also urge Mr. Nicholson to rethink his position. So often I have heard him speak from his religious point of view, and given the Pope's stand on Iraq, I am especially surprised at Mr. Nicholson's stance. If UN sanctions are not being upheld by Iraq, than that is a matter for a united UN peace keeping force. Thc United States should not be waging war alone. As Americans we should not allow ourselves to be led by personal grudges, oil company interests, smoke screens, scape goating and manipulation. We especially should not put the lives of our men and women, and lives of innocent Iraqi citizens at stake for such issues. Dubuque, like other communities across the country, should take a stand. Thank you, Valorie Woerdehoff 3246 St. Anne Drive Dubuque 2/18/2003
