Narrative Description: Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements: Vernacular two-story brick gable front side hall plan (left, double door, transom, original doors), pedimented enclosed porch, twin rounded attic lights, rowlock brick arches, round side light Physical Description: 32x22 core, 27x22 single-story side brick wing with garage, two-story rear frame wing, 7x22, attached gable front single-car garage, shingle exterior Alterations: Asbestos siding on wing, porch replacement, windows reduced on west side wall, likely had tower as do two houses to the north. Building Permits: 1940-alterations 1946-porch re-sided Outbuildings: None Landscaping Notes: Level lot, north of park, drive to south 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: This house can be readily confused with 1860 North Main, its northern neighbor. Sanborn Maps document the historical address as 1796 North Main. Renumbered to present number 1921 City Directory Notes: Will Clarke, clerk; George R., carpenter/builder, Will T., bookkeeper, and Eda Clark, 1886-1890 (1796). (no 1884 listing). . Fred M. Clarke, 1898-1910 Hans Hammacher, 1911-12 Dr. Harry L. Holmes, 1915-18 George Gruener, 1921 Historical Image Notes: 1891 Sanborn map shows this house with wrap-around front porch, rear single-story wing and south side porch and a narrow rear extended porch (1816 Main) 1909 Sanborn shows the same except for a full-width front porch, as 1796 Main. 1909/36 Sanborn shows the same.
