Library Board of Trustees Update
From the Meeting of
September 24, 2009
Present: President; Diann Guns, Paula Connors, David Hammer, Beverly Kolz, Elizabeth
Leeper, Kristen Smith and Mike Willis
The Board met last Thursday. Following is a summary of their meeting:
?
17% of the fiscal year has lapsed and expenditures are at 18% with
revenue generated at 16% of projections
?
Circulation of materials was up 10% to Dubuque residents and 12%
overall over the same time last year. The end of the summer reading
programs did not slow business and the number of visits were up 6%.
Circulation of lap top computers in the library remains an area of high
growth with a 49% increase year-to-date.
?
A walk through and punch list on Phase Two – First Floor was conducted
on Thursday, September 10. Aside from the metal framing around interior
doors and windows rusting, nothing surprising came up and the notes
have been issued for the final work to correct any deficiencies.
?
Hallett Movers will begin moving the Adult Non-Fiction collection from the
west side of the Library to the finished east side (future Children’s area) on
Monday, September 28. The move is expected to take a week.
?
The replacement of entrance plaza and stairs to the Library will begin with
demolition on Monday, September 28. A new snowmelt system under the
sidewalk and stairs in front of the entrance will be installed. A temporary
th
door has been installed at the corner of Locust and 11 Street with ramps
for access. A staff member will be at the entrance at all times to assist
people and check items as people leave. This project will take 3 – 4
weeks depending on the weather.
?
A report was written evaluating the pros and cons of introducing a
circulating video collection. The Board concurred that this material be
added to the collection when funding has been identified and after the
renovation. The full report is available for you to read – please let me
know if you are interested.
?
The Library will host two programs after hours. On Friday, October 23 the
Library will host the Dubuque Cultural Alliance’s celebration of Arts &
Humanities month with a reception and open house from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Guest speaker will be Diane Franken, President of the Iowa Alliance for
th
Arts Education. On November 20 the Library will host an Art @ your
library reception and open house. A call for art has been sent out. The art
work will be displayed on the temporary construction wall in the Rotunda
and offered for sale with a 20% commission going to the Library. This
program will also serve as the introduction of the newly completed area of
the Library where the glass floor mezzanine is located. The reception is
from 5:00 – 800 p.m.
th
?
In November the Friends of the Library will hold a book sale on the 6 and
th
