7. Narrative Description:
Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements:
Two-story 35x25 Italianate frame core with Palladian side wings (18x17), bracketed cornice, five-sided
wrap-around porch, side hall plan (right single entry with transom), hip roof.
Physical Description:
Stone foundation, symmetrical fenestration, centered rear wing, enclosed porch in northwest corner.
The plan contained 12 rooms and a bathroom as of 1941.
Alterations:
The original central core was supplemented by a north wing and then a south wing by Judge King.
Aluminum siding, addition in northwest corner, vertical siding, rear porch.

Evaluation:
Individually NRHP eligible, Criteria C (architecture), B (association with King/Heer family) and A
(development of the city).
Historical Notes:
Judge John King (1803-1871) was born in Shepardstown, Virginia and was the son of Samuel King.
The younger King lived at Chillicothe, Ohio until the 1830s before coming to The Dubuque Mines in
1833. His father died in the city c.1861. King married twice. His first wife died c.1851. His second
wife, a Miss Smith of Cleveland, Ohio, survived him as did two a daughter aged 13 and a son, aged five
years. Two sons were lost to scarlet fever c.1875 (Obituary, Herald, February 14, 1871).
Judge King built this house, occupied it his entire life and was buried from it in 1871. King established
and owned the first newspaper published west of the Mississippi River, transporting the equipment from
Ohio by river in 1835. It was established as a weekly in 1835-1836, and titled the Du Buque Visitor and
then the Iowa News and finally the Herald (the same press later printed the first newspapers in
Lancaster, Wisconsin; St. Paul, Minnesota; and Sioux Falls, Dakota Territory). He was appointed the
first county judge in 1835 and served as postmaster in 1839. King owned most of the land south of

Diagonal and west of Couler Avenue. He built a $2,000 brick dwelling in 1857 and it was claimed that
the estate was surrounded by stone retaining walls (Herald, March 8, 1857). King died February 13,
1871. John Mehlhop Sr. (1817-1901) a tobacco and grocery merchant was the second owner and lived
there from c.1881 until 1891. Third owner architect Fridolin J. Heer Sr. (1817-1910) purchased the
house in October 1891 and his sisters, wife, daughter and son remained there as late as 1941. Fridolin
J. Heer, Jr. used the house as his place of business and lived there until his death. F. Heer owns when
sewered in 1897 (Telegraph-Herald, April 29, 1934; November 16, 1941).
John King builds single-story frame dwelling, $700 (Herald, January 3, 1887), then lives near head of
West Locust but another source states King’s Addition, directory lists on east side of Broadway, fourth

north of 25.

alley to rear, two houses to north, same footprint, full east porch
