Proclamation_Philanthropy Day November 13, 2009
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, philanthropic organizations are responsible for enhancing the quality of life for
people; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of the role played by the uniquely American tradition of philanthropy,

the United States Congress has designated November 15 as National Philanthropy
th
Day, to be celebrated locally on November 13 by the Association of Fundraising
Professionals, Greater Tri-State Chapter; and
WHEREAS, voluntary associations formed to address societal needs are an integral part of
American society; and
WHEREAS, the history of American philanthropy is filled with the names of the founding fathers
and mothers whose efforts spawned universities, free public libraries, homes for
widows and orphans, and volunteer fire departments, to name a few; and
WHEREAS, Americans annually contribute billions of dollars to many worthwhile charities; and
WHEREAS, today the non-profit sector affects nearly every citizen in one way or another. They
include educational, health care and religious organizations, the museums and
special programs for children, the Little Leagues and Scouts that enrich our youth,
the social services agencies that provide food, clothing, housing and training, and
aid to the indigent.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF
THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM NOVEMBER
13, 2009 AS:
“PHILANTHROPY DAY”
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE AND URGE ALL PEOPLE TO RECOGNIZE THE TRADITION OF
AMERICAN PHILANTHROPY AS IT CONTINUES TO IMPROVE AND ENHANCE THE LIVES OF ALL
BY PROMOTING THE COMMON GOOD.
