7. Narrative Description:
Sacred Heart Church was designed by Dubuque architect Fridolin Heer. It is a large structure
(63' x 160') facing southeast, and located at the corner of 22nd and Windsor. The brick church is
Romanesque Revival in design with Bedford limestone trim and a stone foundation and watertable. It is
a single story gable roof rectangle with a narthex, nave, and polygonal apse. A "u" shaped addition
was made around the apse between 1909 and 1936. The dominant characteristic of the Romanesque
Revival style is the round arch. These arches are found throughout the church. The main entrance is
centered on the fayade, with smaller round arched doors on each side, at the base of the towers.
These doors are capped by stone "pediments" with stone finials and crosses. Above the main entrance
are three tall slender round arched windows with the center window slightly taller. The entrances and
these three windows all have stone keystones. A small oculus window appears in the peak of the front
gable which is crowned by a cross. Romanesque buttresses are found at the corners of the towers and
between the tall windows in the side walls of the church. These brick buttresses have limestone caps.
As commonly found in Romanesque Revival churches, the two towers differ in height and design. The
shorter southwest tower measures 130' and is two stories plus the louvered steeple, while the taller
northeast tower is 200' tall and contains three stories plus the polygonal tower with louvered openings
and clocks on the cardinal sides. Paired round arched windows are located in both towers. A
limestone beltcourse connects these windows with the three on the fayade. A broad flight of steps
leads up to the entry doors, all of which appear to be original. Today this church is attached at the rear
to the rectory behind it, and a handicapped accessible entry is located on the side (Windsor Street)
elevation.
This church retains a high degree of integrity and has recently (2000-2001) undergone a
successful preservation project. It should be viewed as the major building in a three building potential
historic district. The other buildings are the rectory, 2215 Windsor, and Marquette Hall (Sacred Heart
School), 2200 Queen.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
The Sacred Heart Parish was established in 1879-1880 by a subdivision of St. Mary's Parish.
The first church building to serve the new parish was located to the south of the present building at the
corner of 22nd and Queen. This small church was designed by Fridolin Heer and built in 1880. It was
demolished within the past 20 years.
Sacred Heart was made up primarily of German speaking emigrants, including some
Luxembourgers. Shortly after the turn of the century it appears that Sacred Heart Parish was divided
with the formation of Holy Trinity, farther east in the neighborhood at 1700 Rhomberg.
