Narrative Description: Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements: Second Empire style, two-story brick plan with side bay (left) and side hall plan (right side, double door) Physical Description: 52x26 core, 6x24 porch, rear wing (19x17) Alterations: Porch posts replaced with square posts, new porch Outbuildings: Two-story narrow clapboard carriage house (pre-1909), 44x16, single story brick ground floor section on east end. Brick arch from cave cellar to southwest of house at base of bluff. Landscaping Notes: Corner lot, low terrace, concrete curb 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: Evaluation: Recommended as being individually eligible for the NRHP due to its style, state of preservation and its associated outbuildings, as well as its historical associations with the Zumhoff family. Historical Notes: "A Good Residence For Sale: A dwelling house with 8 rooms, 2 cisterns, 1 stable, a good many cherry trees and 1 % acres of ground, is situated above the street railroad depot, on Broadway, in King's Addition. For particulars call on George Zumhoff (Daily Herald, June 14, 1872)" [House not identified] George Zumhoff was "erecting a comfortable residence on Broadway Street" as of June 8, 1880 (Herald). "George Zumhof moved into his new house on Broadway yesterday, and occupies quarters fit for a lord of the manor. He has erected one of the finest houses in that part of the city - a worthy tribute to his energy and industry" (Herald, October 28, 1880). George Zumhof builds $6,000 residence on Broadway (Herald, January 1, 1881). Abstract Notes: John King acquires land to south of West 24th, August 1836; Geo. and Maria Zumhoff own as of October 1869, file plat of Brewery Addn. January 15, 1876 along with Peter Kiehne and Dominic Rhomberg, Zumhoff gets mortgage of $3,000 October 1, 1889 and mechanics liens filed by Job S. Randall ($135) Nov. 8, 1880; C. W. Robison ($172) July 2, 1884; Standard Lumber ($179), M. M. Walker Co. ($164) February 26, 1885 which might reference construction of this cottage. William Zumhoff acquires 1904, Anna Zumhoff same 1919, Frank and Cecilia Meyer (1940); Ron Nolling 1987. This house fits none of these reports. Elizabeth Nicks owns when sewered 1912, Lots 3-4. The 1891 Sanborn Map shows this house with a 1.5-story long narrow carriage house to the south, as 90 Blocklinger Lane. It shows a full-width front porch, Mansard roof, east bay and southeast corner inset porch. The 1909 Sanborn shows same, as 90 Blocklinger Lane, with rear shed connecting house to carriage house. 9.
