INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this memo is to provide you information on the performance of the
Green lowa Americorps team during their first quarter of the service term (Sept 2017-
Dec 2017).
BACKGROUND
Operated through the University of Northern lowa's Center for Energy and
Environmental Education, Green lowa AmeriCorps (GIAC) is a community service
program. The mission of the program is to help make lowans more energy efficient
through low-impact home weatherization, energy education, and community outreach.
The City of Dubuque, in partnership with Operation New View, operate as a site host for
the program. Each year, 4-5 full-time members are placed in Dubuque to complete
energy efficiency services to under-served populations and provide additional
sustainability and energy conservation education throughout the community. As
Operation New View is one of the two hosts for the program, members provide services
in Dubuque, Delaware and Jackson counties. The City of Dubuque provides a $5,000
local match each year to host the program; that funding covers program supplies and
educational materials.
DISCUSSION
The following statistics are provided in Dubuque's GIAC first quarterly report for the
2017-18 service term, which is from September 15, 2017 to December 31, 2017.
Enerqv Audits &Weatherizations
41 total audits were performed, 32 of which were performed for populations in need
(includes low-income, elderly, persons with disabilities, Veterans). Of these audits, 11
homes were referrals made from the City Housing & Community Development
Department, primarily through the Bee Branch Healthy Homes program.
40 total weatherizations were performed, 32 of which were performed for populations in
need (includes low-income, elderly, persons with disabilities, Veterans).
Members share a success story each quarter that exemplifies the work they do:
"A success story that stuck out to all of us is a weatherization we did on an old house.
Built in 1880 in Dubuque's old Washington neighborhood, the two-story brick home still
had good bones but had serious issues. The foundation had several holes in the rim
joists, windows leaking air profusely, and openings in the attic. It seemed like a daunting
task, it being one of our first weatherizations. Despite our reservations it went smoothly,
and we caulked, spray foamed, and weather-stripped away. We managed to reduce the
airinfiltration by over 50%. It felt good to successfully complete the audit and
weatherization process, and do it well."
Outreach & Education
41 total outreach and education programs were completed, reaching over 415 people.
303 individuals responded to a survey at the program they attended, and 100°k reported
increased knowledge in the environmental topic based on the presentation.
Examples of events held this quarter include:
• Environmental programming at St. Mark Youth Enrichment programs in Dubuque
Title 1 schools, Peosta, and Dyersville
• EcoMovie Night at Carnegie-Stout Public Library
• Loras College Food Waste Audit
Examples of hands-on service members provided this quarter include:
• Central Ave Roadside Cleanup
• Dubuque Trees Forever Tree Planting
