Narrative Description: Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements: Vernacular two-story gable front L-plan, south end extensions, side porch, plan set sideways relative to street, might be an I-house example or derivative. Physical Description: 47’ depth, 24’ width, partial-width south double-decker porch tucked into corner of south side wing. Alterations: Resided, aluminum siding, small window replaces likely front side entry. West end window replaced with small raised light. Outbuildings: None 8. Narrative Statement of Significance: This property has defied efforts to identify an original builder/occupant. No 1886 listing was found so that would appear to confirm the 1889 building date. Historical Notes: Denied applications to built 4 or 5-plex unit by Board of Adjustments, 1942, 1969, 1970 and 1971. Sewer Record: 1912 sewer record shows Agatha Heim as owner of Lot 1 of Wullweber’s subdivision City Directory Notes: (28 Broadway) 1890-Otto Ulmer, porter for J. T.Hancock & Sons, and Otto Jr., bricklayer/builder (28) (no earlier listing) 1890-also Christian Burdt, contractor, and Frederick Burdt, bricklayer/builder (28) (no earlier listing) 1899-Carl Hansen, draftsman (no earlier listing), Jacob and Margaret Fluetsch, laborer (no previous listing) Ewald Gerkin, Henry Russow 1921 John Carnahan owns 1947. Historical Image Notes: The 1889 Bird’s Eye View shows this house as present, depicted with side wing to south. Not mapped for Sanborn map series.1891 Sanborn Map shows as elongated single-story frame L-plan with south wing at back, porch in inset, a line of narrow additions along north side, second centered addition across lot line, the whole advanced to the curb, as 28 Broadway. The 1909 map shows the same general plan, core raised to two stories, with single long narrow north wing, corner porch two stories and rear cross wing now 1.5-stories, same 1909/36. Large yard to south, sheds in southeast corner.
