Library Board of Trustees Update
From the Meeting of
October 22, 2009
Present: President; Diann Guns, Paula Connors, Beverly Kolz,
Kristen Smith and Mike Willis
Excused: David Hammer and Elizabeth Leeper
The Board met on October 22. Following is a summary of their meeting:
?
25% of the fiscal year has lapsed and expenditures are at 26% with
revenue generated at 23% of projections. Salaries are slightly higher than
expected for several reasons: Maintenance staff has been needed for
many renovation related projects such as moving collections, equipment
and furniture as well as removing material from the library. The front
entrance to the Library being closed has necessitated a door monitor at
the entrance on Locust Street. This person checks items checked out with
his or her receipt and acts as the “security gate.” This created position is
not funded and although it is at entry level salary it adds up at 64 hours a
week for what will likely be a month.
?
Circulation of materials was up 6 percent over the same time last year,
significant because at this time last year we were not under construction.
Registration for new library cards is up 10 percent over the same time last
year.
?
A Library Aide in Youth Services resigned and the position advertised.
Sixty applications were received and eleven candidates will be interviewed
over the next two weeks.
?
A detailed summary of security was presented to the Board to review what
we have done, the current perception of security among staff members,
and a proposal of where we go from here (copy available upon request).
This was prompted by an exit interview with an employee who resigned
that noted one reason for leaving was due to the stress created by so
many problem patrons.
