ITEM TITLE: Music-in-Our-Schools Month (March 2018) SUMMARY: SUGGESTED DISPOSITION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Type Music-in-Our-Schools Month Proclamation Supporting Documentation THE CITY OF UB E Masterpiece on the Mississippi WHEREAS, the study of music contributes to young people's development through heightened skills in listening, reading, self-expression and creativity, and WHEREAS, music education has been shown to improve language skills, cognitive reasoning, math, problem solving, higher level thinking and reasoning and memory, and enhances self- confidence, discipline and social skills, and WHEREAS, music education in the schools includes a broad range of types of music and active musical experiences, and WHEREAS, music and the other arts significantly enhance the morale and quality of the school environment, and WHEREAS, it is the stated objective of the public school to prepare children for a productive role in our society, and WHEREAS, the National Association for Music Educators has designated March 2018 as Music-in- Our-Schools Month; and WHEREAS the City of Dubuque and the Dubuque Community School District do hereby endorse the observance of March 2018 as Music-in-Our-Schools Month. NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE MONTH OF MARCH 2O18 AS: "MUSIC-IN-OUR-SCHOOLS MONTH" IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA.
