7. Narrative Description:
This two story frame house is L - shaped (25’ x 30’) with a gable roof. There is a polygonal bay
on the left (we st) side and a single story wing (33’ x 16’) to the rear. The important decorative elements
are the full front porch with turned posts and a small matching side porch, and the decorative shingling
that covers the walls of the second floor. The paired sen d floor windows have a pedimented cornice. A
single chimney is located in the center of the gable roof.
This house is a simple vernacular structure to which high style details (the millwork and
shingling) have been added. These are Queen Anne elements, but this is not a Queen Anne house.
This house was scheduled to be covered with modern siding soon after this photograph was taken.
This is considered non - eligible due to loss of integrity with the siding.
8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Assessor ’s records provide a construction date of plus/minus 1890 for this house, and that date
appears appropriate. This neighborhood was not mapped by the Sanborn Co. until 1909, but this
house appears on that 1909 map. The 1909 City Directory lists the occup ant as Daniel Ruff, musician
and painter (it didn’t note whether he painted houses or portraits). He is still listed at this address in the
1921 City Directory, but his only occupation is musician.
