In early 2012 community members began to take
notice of challenges related to diversity, equity and
inclusion in Dubuque. Individuals were having trouble
accessing needed services and connecting to parts of
the community, neighborhoods were experiencing
struggles related to demographic changes, and
businesses were reporting difficulty attracting and
retaining a diverse workforce. With a shared desire to
understand challenges and engage community
members, leaders from business, nonprofits,
education, government, philanthropy and the faith
community came together.
The Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque
convened this dynamic group of leaders from business,
 . • . • nonprofits, education, government, philanthropy and
' . . . •. faith communities to engage in conversation and form
 • '• • Inclusive Dubuque. Inclusive Dubuque is a peer-
• . . learning network of partners committed to creating an
• . • .•. . . informed, equitable and inclusive community where all
   • people are respected, valued and engaged .

St. Mark Youth Enrichment has been serving the community for
the past 30 years. Beginning after the St. Mark Lutheran Church
closed its doors in 1988, St. Mark Youth Enrichment became
a community center, that provides mentoring for 10 students
from the downtown neighborhood. Now St. Mark serves over 500
students both in Dubuque and Western Dubuque communities.
Efforts focus on educational and social emotional learning
through before and after school and summer programs that
engage families.
In 2017 St. Mark received a grant for $8,285.09. These funds
provided transformative enrichment opportunities for students in
the St. Mark Heroes Summer Academy. This seven week program
served 143 students in Dubuque and 59 students in Western
Dubuque; made possible by partnerships with Boys and Girls Club
and Dubuque Museum of Art. Classroom learning and community
field experience resulted in 88% of students increasing or
_ „ _ maintaining their literacy skills. Their visit to the Field of Dreams
. .-. .
included a special appearance by a Ghost Player, shown above.
