NEWS RELEASE
December 21, 2009 -FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dubuque Named a 2009 `Crown Community'
DUBUQUE, Iowa -American City & County' magazine today announced that Dubuque is
one of 11 cities selected as 2009 "America's Crown Communities."
American City & County presents the awards annually in recognition of outstanding
leadership in local government. This year's award winners are: Alexandria, Va.; Casselberry,
Fla.; Chandler and Gilbert, Ariz.; Decatur, Ala.; Dubuque, Iowa; Hillsborough County, Fla.;
Mounds View, Minn.; Polk County, Fla.; Richmond and York County, Va.; South San
Francisco, Calif.; and West Palm Beach, Fla. A profile of each community's winning project is
featured in the December issue of the magazine and is available online at http://diQital-
edition.americancityandcounty.com.
Recipients of the annual awards are selected by the editors of American City & County based
on nominations submitted by the magazine's audience, city and county leaders, and
associations. Any local government initiative substantially completed within the last year can
qualify for the awards, including those that repair infrastructure, introduce new technology,
improve quality of life for residents, or beautify public places. Entries are judged on
uniqueness, short- and long-term value to the community, and effective/innovative financing.
Dubuque's nomination featured the partnerships and collaboration among the City of
Dubuque, State of Iowa, Iowa Department of Economic Development, Iowa Workforce
Development, Dubuque Initiatives, Greater Dubuque Development Corporation, area
colleges and universities, and local financial institutions that resulted in IBM's decision to
locate a new global technology service delivery center that will employ 1,300 in downtown
Dubuque.
"Dubuque's selection underscores our community's ability to partner and achieve great things
of value for the City's long term success, and is one of the things that makes Dubuque
unique," said Dubuque Mayor Roy D. Buol. "We are proud to be a `Crown Community' and to
share this honor with the many individuals and organizations that were so important to the
success of the IBM project."
"Despite the downturn in the economy, local government leaders produced a record number
of winning Crown Communities' projects," said Bill Wolpin, editorial director and associate
publisher of American City & County. "The judges had a tough time selecting because there
were so many outstanding entries to choose from."
